"Together Again," The Muppets Take Manhattan
Boss fights are fun to play (assuming it's a well designed boss) but not necessarily fun to right about. That seems to be the case with one I just fought, against a monster known as King Fury.
Normally I try to pad this by making interesting, non-spoilery observations, but I'm drawing a blank, so I'll just put in a cut. If you clicked on this from some link, you probably knew what to expect. If not, read on.
King Fury is actually the possessed corpse of a scholar named Sugawara, who is actually dead, but reanimated. Like Kurow, he comes from the moon. And like Kurow, he understands the technology in the ruins. Unlike our mellow companion, King Fury wants to use this technology to activate a giant robot who will then kill all humans. The battle with King Fury actually takes place on the robot, as you race up its legs and body to the control panel on the head. (The robot actually does feel nice and big, but it was impossible to get a good screen shot of him, since you rarely saw all of him in the screen at once.)
King Fury, in addition to wanting to eradicate humanity, kidnapped Kagu, because he wanted to use her exorcism powers to make himself even more dangerous. (During the battle he throws prayer strips at you, the same technique she uses.) So when you finally defeat him, Kagu is rescued.
Chibi and Kurow, after defeating him, exorcise the demon from Sugawara. Then Kurow goes off to with the pretty scholar. (It's his first date, though since they decide to repair Sugawara's tomb, it's not quite the most romantic option available. They're in a city overlooking a beautiful bay; I'd suggest a walk on the beach.)
I'm not entirely clear why Sugawara got possessed in the first place, how he died, or what moon people are doing visiting this place. Maybe it will become clearer later. Or maybe there are some cultural issues I don't understand, and in Japan the idea of dead moon people becoming demons is as common as the idea of cowboys in black being great shots is in America.
Anyway, Kagu is back. And she gives you the ability to teleport from certain save points to others. I'm happy about this, not just because it saves time, but because I think that parts of the game I'd previously visited had become locked off. I'm also glad that previous partners make a return, because each has their own unique special ability, and it would suck to learn it, use it for one or two puzzles, and forget about it completely.
What I'd love to see is a point where you can choose between multiple companions, each with an advantage. So you might choose between Kagu's ability to see invisible things and the mermaid's ability to get things underwater. You could explore the same place twice, with a different feel each time.
Tune in tomorrow when we see what fine adventures Kagu and Chibi will have this time.
